ISL 2023-24: Mehtab Singh pens contract extension with Mumbai City FC until 2026

Ahead of the next season of the Indian Super League (ISL 2023–24), it was reported by Mumbai City FC that Mehtab Singh has signed a three-year contract extension, which would keep him with the Islanders until May 2026.

Commenting on the contract extension, Mehtab Singh said, “It has been a privilege to be a part of this wonderful team and I am delighted that I have the opportunity to stay here for three more years. Everyone at Mumbai City has a great bond and the club has built an environment where we are always supporting and encouraging each other. With the support of Des Buckingham, his staff and everyone at the club, I have certainly grown a lot as a player but also as a person but I don’t want to stop here. I’m excited to live the next chapter of my Mumbai City story and I hope I can give more to the club, the coach, my teammates and the fans.”

Head Coach, Des Buckingham said, “Mehtab has developed into one of the best young Indian defenders in the league and this has been down to his hard work and openness to learning. He possesses a lot of strong characteristics we look for in our defenders and is a very exciting prospect for the future. I’m delighted he had committed to the club and look forward to seeing him continue building on his future potential with us in the coming seasons.”

Mehtab Singh Career

Mehtab started his footballing career at the Mahilpur Football Academy before joining the young setup at East Bengal in 2016. Mehtab is originally from Khemkaran, which is located in the state of Punjab. After putting on a show for the under-18 squad, Mehtab was called up to play for the East Bengal first team, where he remained for a total of two seasons, including a loan stint with Gokulam Kerala. The next year, in 2021, Mehtab made the switch to the Islanders and helped them win the “double” in the ISL, which consists of the League Winners’ Shield and the Trophy. The following year, he was a part of the Islanders’ historic run in the AFC Champions League, in which they won twice in the group stage.

The 25-year-old has gone from strength to strength since joining Mumbai City FC in 2020, and he has established himself as a rock in the Islanders’ defence. Since then, he has joined the club. Mehtab was an essential component of Des Buckingham’s team that won the League Winners’ Shield in 2022–2023 and qualified for the AFC Champions League the following season. In addition, Mehtab helped the team finish in second place in the Durand Cup competition.

As a result of his time spent with the Islanders, Mehtab has evolved into a centre defender who is comfortable with the ball and topped the charts in the 2022–23 ISL season for the most successful passes. The young defender from Punjab has also developed into a consistent goalscoring threat from set pieces and has scored five times while wearing the colours of Mumbai City. The goal that stands out the most was a thundering left-footed finish in Kochi against the Kerala Blasters during the 2022–23 league season.

Soon after, members of the Indian national team saw Mehtab playing for the Islanders and were impressed with his impressive play. Following his participation with the India Under-23 team in the AFC U23 Championship, he was called up to the senior national team in March 2023. His first match with the senior team was a 1-0 victory over Myanmar at the Tri-Nation Football Tournament held in Manipur.
