Indonesia Open: India’s Satwik and Chirag triumph, create history

On Sunday, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty claimed the men’s doubles title at the Indonesia Open in Jakarta, becoming the first Indian doubles team to win a Super 1000 tournament.

The world’s sixth-ranked pair, who won gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and bronze at the global championships last year, defeated Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yika in two consecutive games, 21-17 and 21-18.

Earlier, the bronze medalists from the 2022 world championships had become the first ever Indian pair to reach the final of any Super 1000 tournament with a sensational comeback victory over the Korean duo of Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae (17-21, 21-19, 21-18).

In 43 minutes, the Indians, who were also Asian champions, defeated the current world champions.

The BWF (Badminton World Federation) World Tour consists of six tiers: the World Tour Finals, four Super 1000s, six Super 750s, seven Super 500s, and eleven Super 300s. The BWF Tour Super 100 level is another tournament category that offers ranking points. Each of these competitions provides a unique combination of ranking points and prize money. The Super 1000 level offers the maximum points and prize fund.
