May aviation data: Domestic passenger traffic up 36% on year, 2.5% jump from April

When compared to the same month last year, the number of flights within India went up by 36% in May. Data from May provided by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on June 15 shows that 1.32 crore people flew on domestic airlines in May.

Domestic air travel was also up 2.5 percent in May compared to April, when 1.29 crore people flew on domestic flights. Since COVID, there has been a big increase in air travel. In May 2019, only 1.22 crore people flew on local airlines.

The Aviation Pie

IndiGo, which is India’s biggest airline, got 390 basis points more of the market in May than it did in April. This was because GoFirst went out of business on May 2.

In May, IndiGo’s market share was 61.3%, which was up 70 basis points from April, 90 basis points from March, and 130 basis points from February. In May, 81,100,000 people went on the low-cost airline.

One hundredth of a percentage point is one basis point.

In May, Air India became the second-biggest domestic airline. It had a 9.4 percent market share and flew 12.44 lakh people during that time.

The airline’s market share went from 9.2% in January to 8.6% in April, which is a drop of 20–30 basis points each month.

But when Go First was grounded, the airline was able to regain some of its market share.

In May, Vistara’s market share went up 30 basis points to 9%, and the airline carried 11,95 lakh passengers.

AirAsia India, which is also owned by Tata, moved up to the number four market share spot. Its market share went up by 30 basis points to 7.9% in May, when 10.41 lakh people flew on its planes.

After Go First went out of business in May, SpiceJet became the fifth-biggest Indian domestic airline in terms of market share.

But Akasa Air, a new airline, is close behind SpiceJet because SpiceJet’s market share fell by another 40 basis points in May, while Akasa Air’s market share went up by 80 basis points.

In May, SpiceJet carried 7.2 lakh passengers, which gave it a market share of 5.4%. Akasa Air, on the other hand, carried 6.29 lakh passengers, which gave it a market share of 4.8%.

IndiGo took most of GoFirst’s market share of 6.4% and 8.29 lakh passengers in April. This is because IndiGo carried 7.04 lakh more passengers in May than it did in April.

In May, SpiceJet, Vistara, IndiGo, Air India, and AirAsia India each had a passenger load factor, or usage rate, of 94.8, 93.2, 91.5, 90.1, and 92.8 percent, respectively.

Akasa Air is India’s newest airline. In May, its tenth month of service, its passenger load factor went up from 73.6 percent in March to 91.1 percent. In April, it was 84.9 percent.

Data shows that 566 passenger reports were sent in during the month of May. About 0.42 reports were made for every 10,000 people who were transported.

The main reason for the rise in passenger complaints in May was that Go First stopped running during the month.

Akasa Air had the best on-time performance at four major airports (Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai) in May, with 92.6 percent of its flights arriving on time. This was the third month in a row that this was the case.

Air Asia came in second, then IndiGo and Vistara came in second and third.
