During a recent event held in Brussels, Microsoft President Brad Smith reaffirmed his support for the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) and outlined how his company can play a role in shaping the regulatory landscape. Smith’s remarks echoed his previous statements made in Washington, where he, along with Twitter owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, aimed to engage regulators and lawmakers in discussions about AI regulation. The emergence of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, backed by Microsoft, has sparked significant public interest in AI and further highlighted the necessity for regulation.

Major tech companies are actively providing recommendations on how AI should be governed in an effort to influence the regulatory environment and mitigate any potential negative impacts on their business operations. Notably, the European Union is currently developing the AI Act, a groundbreaking set of rules that could serve as a global benchmark for AI regulation.

Smith expressed Microsoft’s commitment to offering constructive ideas to inform the ongoing work on AI regulation. In a blog post, he stated, “Our intention is to offer constructive contributions to help inform the work ahead.” During the Brussels conference, he reiterated this commitment and emphasised Microsoft’s dedication to shaping AI regulation in a manner that aligns with the EU’s proposed legislation.

Microsoft has developed a comprehensive five-point blueprint for governing AI that closely aligns with the EU’s regulatory framework. The blueprint includes the establishment of government-led AI safety frameworks, the implementation of safety brakes for AI systems responsible for overseeing critical infrastructure, and ensuring academic access to AI. Smith underscored the compatibility of Microsoft’s blueprint with the EU’s proposed regulations, showcasing their shared goals in ensuring responsible and ethical AI development and deployment.

Moreover, Smith stressed the importance of collaboration on AI governance among various nations, including the EU, the United States, G7 countries, India, and Indonesia. He emphasised the need for working together based on shared values and principles to establish a global AI governance framework that is consistent and inclusive. By collaborating internationally, stakeholders can share insights, best practises, and regulatory approaches to create a unified and harmonised AI regulatory landscape.

The regulation of AI is becoming increasingly crucial as the technology advances and becomes more pervasive in various aspects of our lives. AI has the potential to bring about significant benefits, but it also raises ethical and societal concerns that must be addressed through appropriate governance. Ensuring transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI systems is paramount to building trust and fostering the responsible development and deployment of this transformative technology.

By actively engaging in discussions and offering their expertise, major tech companies like Microsoft are playing a pivotal role in shaping AI regulation. Their involvement showcases their recognition of the importance of establishing a regulatory framework that balances innovation and societal well-being. Microsoft’s commitment to contributing constructive ideas and aligning their blueprint with the EU’s proposed legislation demonstrates their dedication to responsible AI development and their willingness to collaborate with policymakers and stakeholders.

In conclusion, Microsoft’s President Brad Smith remains a vocal advocate for the regulation of AI and continues to emphasise the company’s willingness to contribute to ongoing regulatory efforts. Microsoft’s comprehensive five-point blueprint for governing AI aligns with the EU’s proposed legislation, emphasising their shared commitment to responsible and ethical AI development. Smith’s call for international collaboration in AI governance reflects the importance of working together to establish consistent and inclusive regulations based on shared values and principles. Through these collaborative efforts, stakeholders can ensure that AI is developed and deployed in a manner that benefits society while addressing ethical concerns and potential risks.

After more than a decade of service, Google Play Movies & TV, a popular platform for renting and purchasing television shows and films, is bidding farewell. Launched in 2011, this platform provided a straightforward solution for expanding one’s entertainment options, allowing users to synchronise their acquisitions across various Google products, including YouTube.

Signs of Google Play Movies & TV’s departure first emerged in 2020 with the introduction of Google TV. Notably, the Play Movies application was excluded from this new platform. Instead, Google TV introduced a ‘Library’ tab that housed users’ existing purchases, seamlessly integrating rentals and purchases directly onto the home screen. In the same year, Google TV made its debut on Android and iOS devices. Consequently, in 2021, Google discontinued the Play Movies & TV application on platforms like Roku and other smart TVs, guiding users to access their content through YouTube instead—a change that was widely perceived as a significant downgrade.

Over the past few years, Google Play Movies and TV have continued to be available solely on the Android TV platform. However, even this last remnant is now disappearing as Google incorporates purchases directly onto the Android TV home screen. Coinciding with this alteration, Google Play Movies & TV is being replaced by a new feature called the ‘Shop’ tab. This feature, which supports existing libraries synchronised from Play Movies, Google TV, and YouTube, mirrors the functionality of the ‘Library’ tab found on Google TV.

Despite these transformations, Google has reassured users that they will still be able to use the Play Movies application, although some uncertainty remains about the app’s future prospects. Regardless, any purchases made through the service will remain accessible in users’ libraries, along with any films or television programmes bought or rented directly from YouTube or Android TV.

The introduction of the ‘Shop’ tab on Android TV allows for the direct discovery and purchase of new films and television shows, eliminating the need to open additional applications or reach for a mobile device. The user experience closely resembles that of Google TV, ensuring a smooth transition for users.

Initially, this update is rolling out in the United States, and it is expected to become available in 24 countries in the coming weeks.

While the end of Google Play Movies & TV marks the end of an era, it also demonstrates Google’s ongoing evolution in the digital entertainment sphere as it streamlines its services and promotes its newer platforms. The company is constantly adapting to meet the changing needs and preferences of its users, and this transition reflects its commitment to delivering a more integrated and seamless entertainment experience.

Telegram, the popular instant messaging (IM) service, has announced that it will be introducing its own version of Stories to the platform next month.

In a post, CEO Pavel Durov revealed that Stories is one of the most requested features by Telegram users. He stated, “More than half of all feature requests that we receive are related to Stories.” While Telegram initially resisted adding Stories because they were already prevalent on other platforms, they ultimately decided to listen to their users and innovate on existing formats.

Telegram’s Stories will offer various features to enhance the user experience. Users will be able to add captions to their stories, allowing them to provide context or include links. Additionally, they can tag other users in their stories. There will be different sharing options available, including sharing stories with all contacts, making them public, or selecting from a list of close friends or individual contacts.

Similar to Meta’s implementation of Stories in Messenger, Telegram will place the stories in an expandable list at the top of users’ conversations. However, Telegram will also provide the option to hide stories by moving them to a “Hidden” list. Furthermore, users will have the ability to create stories using both front and rear phone cameras simultaneously, adding a unique twist to the feature.

Users will have control over the duration of their stories before they expire. They can choose from durations of 6, 12, 24, or 48 hours, or even display them permanently on their profile.

Telegram is currently in the testing phase for the Stories feature and expects the rollout to commence in early July. The company aims to ensure that the feature meets users’ expectations and functions seamlessly before making it available to a wider user base.

By introducing Stories, Telegram joins the ranks of other popular social media platforms that have incorporated this feature into their services. Stories have become a popular way for users to share moments and experiences with their contacts in a more casual and ephemeral manner.

With the anticipated launch of Stories on Telegram, users can look forward to a new and interactive way of sharing content and engaging with their connections on the platform.

Google made the announcement that it would discontinue production of Google Glass in March of this year. Google Glass was a set of smart glasses that had the appearance of a conventional pair of spectacles and showed information such as e-mails, weather forecasts, text messages, and driving directions.

However, as a result of recent developments in the augmented reality (AR) industry brought about by companies like Apple, Meta, and Samsung, many people were looking forward to the next version of the company’s AR headgear, which was internally referred to as “Project Iris.” However, according to a recent article published by Business Insider, there is evidence to imply that Google may have scrapped the project many months after its primary developer, Clay Bavor, departed the company’s augmented reality group.

In the beginning, Google intended to release Project Iris as its own individual piece of hardware. The multinational technology corporation purchased a Canadian firm known as North in 2020. North worked on developing smart glasses and even gave a demonstration of the glasses’ capacity to interpret. Google said in July of the previous year that it would begin testing AR prototypes in the real world.

What went wrong?

During the development period, it was stated that there were a lot of layoffs as well as ‘constantly altering plans’ about Project Iris. In addition to Clay Bavor, who was in charge of VR and AR at Google, another developer named Kurt Akeley has left the company. It is also believed that the internet giant has terminated its internal development of AR gear; nevertheless, it seems that certain staff will still stay at Google Labs to continue testing and developing AR technology.

Is Google done with AR headsets?

Although it would seem that Google has given up on the augmented reality (AR) market, this is not quite the case. At the beginning of this year, Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm made the announcement that they were collaborating on the development of a mixed-reality headset. Samsung would be in charge of creating the Qualcomm processor that would power the headset, and Google would be in charge of creating the headset’s software.

Given that there are still certain teams at Google working with augmented reality (AR), two workers have speculated that the firm may one day revive Project Iris. In addition, it seems that the employees who are still employed at Google’s AR Labs branch are now working on the development of software that will be used to power future XR (Extended Reality) devices.

However, the current claim adds that the technology giant is also working on a micro XR’ platform for AR glasses, in addition to confirming that Samsung’s future XR headgear would operate on a customised version of Android. Google made this announcement a month ago. It is possible that the prototype platform known as ‘Betty’ may ultimately be licenced to manufacturers in a manner similar to how Google licences Android.

This week, Amazon said that buyers would be able to exchange their Rs. 2,000 notes. The Reserve Bank of India made the comment after deciding on May 19 to take all Rs. 2,000 notes out of circulation as part of its Clean Note Policy. The central bank of India has said that all the notes currently in circulation can be put into bank accounts or swapped by September 30.

People are having trouble exchanging their notes or putting them in the bank. Amazon has started a programme to help their users swap their notes. Amazon has said in an official statement that customers will be able to add money to their Amazon Pay funds with Rs. 2,000 notes when they order items with cash on delivery. The change that is left over can be put into the Amazon Pay pocket.

The e-commerce giant has said that users can pay up to Rs. 50,000 per month, including notes worth Rs.

How to change a Rs. 2,000 note in India using the Amazon Pay wallet:

Step 1: To begin with, customers need to complete video KYC on the Amazon app
Step 2: Once the KYC process is done, customers can place a cash on delivery order
Step 3: Next, customers can hand over the cash to delivery agent on their order
Step 4: The delivery agent will update the remaining balance on the customer’s Amazon Pay balance instantly

The new amount on the Amazon Pay wallet can be used for online shopping, paying with QR codes, doing recharges, giving money to friends and family, or making digital payments on apps like Swiggy and Zomato.

Customers who have gone through the KYC process are the only ones who can exchange or update their Amazon Pay amount with a Rs. 2,000 note. So, it’s important for customers to finish the KYC process before the trade begins.

Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, and Linda Yaccarino, the company’s recently appointed Chief Executive, discussed the company’s plan to prioritise video, creator, and commerce partnerships in an investor presentation that was seen by Reuters. This approach is part of the company’s attempts to rejuvenate the business of the social media platform.

On Thursday, Yaccarino, who became CEO of Twitter on June 5, addressed the company’s investors and said that preliminary talks are now being held with political and entertainment personalities, payment providers, and producers of news and media content about future collaborations. Yaccarino took over as CEO of Twitter on June 5. The information was obtained during a private investor call, as disclosed by a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition that they remain anonymous.

This presentation served as Yaccarino’s very first encounter with the company’s investors, and it served as a signal of her dedication to guiding Twitter on a new path.

Since Musk’s purchase of Twitter in October, the social media platform has been going through a time of upheaval, which has included layoffs, criticism over content moderation practises, and the withdrawal of several sponsors who were worried about brand safety. The hire of Yaccarino by Musk, a seasoned advertising executive who was responsible for transforming ad sales at NBCUniversal (which is owned by Comcast), highlighted the significance of digital advertisements for the future of Twitter.

After Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, a number of ad-buying companies had already counselled their customers to halt spending on Twitter advertisements. On the other hand, during the presentation to the investors, one of the slides revealed that this advice had been changed and that big advertising holding corporations no longer advised pausing the campaign. According to the slide, well-known companies including Warner Bros., Mondelez, McDonald’s, and Walmart have restarted their advertising campaigns on Twitter after instituting brief hiatuses in such efforts.

Yaccarino also disclosed some encouraging information to the investors, informing them that advertising expenditures in a number of advertiser categories had climbed by at least forty percent year-over-year. According to the source, the areas of consumer packaged goods, health care, and financial services have all seen notable expansion.

Under Musk’s leadership, Twitter changed its name to X to represent his intention to develop a “super app” comparable to China’s WeChat, which would combine digital payments and other services. This goal was reflected in Musk’s decision to rename Twitter. According to one of the slides from the presentation, as part of this ambition, Twitter is now in the process of applying for “money transmitter licences” in each of the fifty states that make up the United States.

In addition, Twitter has been working hard to expand the amount of video content available on its platform. During the presentation, it was brought to everyone’s attention that vertical videos now make up more than 10 percent of the total time spent on Twitter. Tucker Carlson, who once had a programme on Fox News, has lately debuted a new show on Twitter called “Tucker on Twitter.” This is an important development. According to the information provided by the source, the corporation is considering the potential of selling advertisements and sponsorships alongside films produced by Carlson and other content providers.

In recent days, Yaccarino has voiced her contentment with the help that she has gotten from Musk, who has shown excitement for her ideas. She has said that she is grateful for Musk’s assistance. According to the insider, this fruitful working relationship bodes well for the future of Twitter under Yaccarino’s leadership.

Users and investors are eagerly awaiting the platform’s transition, keen to see how these efforts will influence the future of social media behemoth Twitter. As Twitter makes serious moves to leverage strategic relationships and extend its products, the platform is expected to undergo a metamorphosis.

The parent company of Facebook, Meta, has laid off about 21,000 people worldwide. In 2022, it was revealed that 11,000 people would lose their employment due to the first wave of layoffs. 10,000 workers were impacted by the second phase, which was revealed in March. Nonetheless, in March, the warning of layoffs was only sent to 4,000 employees. The news that they would be laid off was sent to the remaining 6,000 workers one month ago.

A significant number of workers have taken to LinkedIn in order to convey their experiences after the most recent wave of layoffs. One of these workers is a guy who joined Facebook around five years ago and recalls how the workplace used to be lively and crowded with people when he first started working there.

Ex-Meta employee remembers his first day at Facebook

When writing about his first day at Facebook, the former employee of Meta said things like, “I’ll never forget my first day at Facebook, Austin.” What really stayed with me was how vibrant the office was and how it was filled to the brim with people who wanted nothing more than to work together to solve unprecedented, incredibly nuanced, and complex problems on a truly global scale. Sure, the in-office perks and the world-class benefits were amazing, and I don’t want to minimise them or take them for granted, but what really stuck with me was how vibrant the office was.

The European Union’s historic guidelines for artificial intelligence, known as the EU AI Act, have been passed by the European Parliament. With this, a significant barrier has been removed, paving the way for the first official regulation of AI in the West to become law.

As corporations fight for a leadership position in the development of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a significant battlefield in the global technology sector. This is especially true for generative AI, which can produce new material based on user suggestions. These laws are the first of their kind to cover all aspects of AI.

Academics, businesses, and even schoolchildren have been amazed by the capabilities of generative artificial intelligence (AI), which include writing song lyrics and generating code. However, this has also resulted in concerns around the loss of jobs, biassed information, and inaccurate information.

The Artificial Intelligence Act was passed by Parliament on a pivotal vote on Wednesday with 499 votes in favour, 28 votes against, and 93 abstentions. Although there is a long way to go before the legislation is codified into law, it is expected to be one of the first official guidelines established for the technology on a worldwide scale.

The members of the European Parliament have reached an agreement to place further limits on generative AI tools like ChatGPT. Before placing their products on the market, creators of generative artificial intelligence will have to first have their systems evaluated.

In addition, the Parliament came to the conclusion that it would not budge from its position to outlaw contentious “social scoring” systems and real-time biometric identification systems.

Advocates for human rights expressed concern over a proposal by the European People’s Party to weaken the prohibition. In spite of this, lawmakers pushed on with it and ultimately reached a consensus to ban biometric tracking in all public places.

For those developing generative AI models, such as the Microsoft-supported ChatGPT model by OpenAI and the Bard model by Google, the regulations have significant repercussions.

The goal of the Artificial Intelligence Act, according to Jens-Henrik Jeppesen, senior director of public policy at Workday, is to “build safeguards on the development and use of these technologies to ensure that we have an innovation-friendly environment for these technologies so that society can benefit from them.”

After the vote, he said to CNBC, “I believe that those are the appropriate goals.”

The next step in the process is for negotiators to be present at EU institutions such as the EU executive body and the 27 member states.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Executive Officer of Github, Thomas Dohmke, issued a plea to European authorities, urging them to listen to the private sector as they move forward with guidelines for artificial intelligence.

Dohmke told CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal that “we encourage the European Union and the US government to move really fast and listen to those that built the technology.” The people who produced the technology include not just those in the commercial company but also those in universities and in the open-source community.

This occurs at a time when nations all around the globe are attempting to establish regulations and standards pertaining to AI.

On Monday, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, made a brazen push to make the United Kingdom the “geographical home” of artificial intelligence safety regulation. In addition, preparations are being made by the government to host a worldwide conference on AI safety later this year.
